SFAA'S DELEGATION MEETS WITH MEMBERS OF CATHOLIC BISHOPS CONFERENCE OF LIBERIA ABOUT REBUILDING ST. PATRICK'S

Nearly one year after launching a successful student sponsorship program to support the girls at St. Teresa's Convent (STC), Saints Friskies Alumni Association has turned its focus on the rebuilding of St. Patrick's High School (SPHS). Over the weekend of July 27 - 29, 2018, Stephen Koffa, President of SFAA and member of the Committee to Rebuild St. Patrick's (CORES), and Charles Cooper, Treasurer of SFAA and Chair of CORES, travelled to Tenafly, New Jersey to meet with members of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Liberia (CABICOL). They met with Father Patrick Kroteh, Father Boniface Florkiah, Father Boniface Tye, Bishop Andrew Karnley and Bishop Anthony Borwah.
Bishop Anthony F. Borwah is Bishop of the Diocese of Gbarnga and President of CABICOL. Bishop Andrew J. Karnley is Bishop of the Diocese of Cape Palmas. Father Boniface B. Florkiah is Parish Priest of Christ the King Catholic Church in Gaye Town, Sinkor Old Road, Monrovia. Father Patrick Kroteh is CABICOL's USA Mission Office Representative.
The first meeting, held at the headquarters of the Society of African Missions (SMA) in Teaneck, NJ, on Friday, July 27, 2018, convened at 5:00 pm. At the meeting, President Koffa and Chairman Cooper briefed Father Patrick Kroteh and Father Boniface Florkiah on the progress of SFAA's initiative to rebuild St. Patrick's. They stressed that implementation of plans to rebuild St. Patrick’s will be more efficient with strategic partnerships between SFAA, the Catholic Secretariat, the Archdiocese and leading members of the Catholic clergy in Liberia.

In response, Father Patrick Kroteh thanked SFAA's delegation for reaching out to CABICOL for the purpose of establishing a working relationship. He noted that the rebuilding of St. Patrick's is long overdue, and that SFAA's initiative is a commendable one. He reviewed the initial draft of SFAA's Proposal to Rebuild St. Patrick's and was impressed with the level of detail showing construction cost estimates and the justification for rebuilding St. Patrick's. He promised to facilitate communication between SFAA and Archbishop Lewis Zeigler in Monrovia, Liberia.
After listening and reviewing the initial draft of the proposal to rebuild St. Patrick's, Father Boniface Florkiah echoed the sentiments of Father Patrick. He also lauded SFAA's effort and promised to support the project any way possible.

The next day, Saturday, July 28, 2018, Stephen Koffa and Charles Cooper attended a mass celebrating the 171st Independence Day of the Republic of Liberia. The celebrant of the mass was Bishop Anthony F. Borwah. Bishop Borwah delivered a message built on the theme "Celebrating Our Faith and Heritage."
At the reception following the mass, Koffa and Cooper were introduced to Bishop Borwah and Bishop Karnley. Both Bishops graciously sat with SFAA's representatives to discuss the topic of rebuilding St. Patrick's.
Bishop Karnley's perspective on the project was instructive because 10 years ago, he represented the Archdiocese when it
commissioned Milton and Richards Architectural Firm to render the drawings for the new school. With this history, he counseled that we think about scalability and access as we design our plans for the school. He said facilities for recreation and extracurricular activities should factor into our plans. He also noted that with non-existent zoning ordinances, people have built small houses all around land. Access from the street is not that easy. Therefore, we may have to consult with the Ministry of Public Works and City Council of Paynesville to resolve this issue.
At the end of the reception, the SFAA delegation thanked the Bishops and Priests for their time and support. The delegation also received the contact information for the clergy and promised to stay in touch.
Meeting the Catholic clergy this weekend was important because it is a part of a larger strategy to rebuild St. Patrick's. SFAA believes to successfully rebuild the school, the organization has to establish and nurture strategic partnerships with the Archdiocese of Monrovia and Ministry of Education. These partnerships will provide guidance on the best way to implement plans to rebuild St. Patrick's.
SFAA is profoundly grateful to Al Gbi Toe, Saints Class of ’74, for arranging the meeting between CABICOL and SFAA. The meetings with the clergy would not have been possible without his actions.
DR. KUMEH MEETS WITH ARCHBISHOP LEWIS ZEIGLER IN MONROVIA TO DISCUSS SFAA'S PLANS TO REBUILD ST. PATRICK'S HIGH SCHOOL
Dr. Odell Kumeh, a member of the Committee to Rebuild St. Patrick's (CORES), met with Archbishop Lewis Zeigler in Monrovia on Monday, July 23, 2018. The purpose of the meeting was to inform Archbishop Zeigler about SFAA's initiative to rebuild St. Patrick's High School, request the support of the Archdiocese, and confirm the existence of the proposed site for the construction of the school.
Judging by the results of the meeting, Dr. Kumeh accomplished her goals. The Archbishop confirmed the existence and availability of the land upon which the school will be rebuilt. She viewed a copy of the deed which showed that the size of land is 4 acres.
The land is located near SKD Stadium in Paynesville, Monrovia.
Archbishop Zeigler noted that a small chapel is currently located on the site, but there is ample space to construct a school the size of St. Patrick's High School.
Dr. Kumeh requested and received verbal support from Archbishop about SFAA's Rebuild St. Patrick's Project, to be followed by an official letter from the Archdiocese stating its support for the project.
Dr. Kumeh also explained to the Archbishop that to successfully rebuild and reopen St. Patrick's, SFAA plans to establish a strategic partnership with 2 entities: the Catholic Secretariat and the Ministry of Education. The role of the Catholic Secretariat will be to assist in any way it can, especially when it's time to appeal to an Order to return to Liberia to run the school. Archbishop Zeigler assured Dr. Kumeh he is willing to help with getting an Order to run the school but will do this only after construction of the school begins.
SFAA is grateful to Dr. Kumeh for a job well done. The response of Archbishop Zeigler is encouraging. SFAA will keep pressing forward with its plan to rebuild St. Patrick's High School.
2017-2018 FINAL GRADES FOR A2S STUDENTS NOW AVAILABLE
On Monday July 23, 2018, SFAA received the 2017-2018 Academic Report for 41 of 51 students in the A2S Program. We contacted Sister Evelina about the outstanding report for the remaining 10 students. She responded that she will provide the missing reports and address our concerns on August 3, 2018. The school is currently closed for summer break. As soon as we receive the update from Sister Evelina, we will notify you.

RECRUITMENT OF A2S SPONSORS FOR 2018-2019 UNDERWAY
Sister Evelina, Principal of STC, and Ms. Wokie Kpanyor, Vice Principal of STC, with students benefiting from SFAA's Alumni-To-Students Sponsorship Program (A2S)
Recruitment of sponsors for Academic Year 2018-2019 for our Alumni-To-Student Sponsorship (A2S) program is underway. During academic year 2017 -2018, we sponsored 51 students at the cost of $24,000.00. We are grateful to all of our sponsors and supporters who made this program possible. But, we cannot stop there. More girls at STC need our help.
Our goal for Academic Year 2018-2019 is double our sponsorship from fifty-one (51) to one hundred (100) girls. We estimate the cost at $50,000.00. With your help, we know we can do it.
SFAA's Alumni-To-Student Sponsorship Program (A2S) was launched in August 2017. The year-to-year program matches alumni with students, with alumni making a commitment to provide financial assistance. Since then, the positive impact of the program on the girls, their families and the institution is undeniable. Tuition and supplies for deserving students are paid, consequently relieving parents and guardians of that financial burden. The program also generates much needed revenue for the school to operate.
With SFAA's Class Challenge, corporate sponsors recruitment initiative, grant solicitation etc., we are continuously seeking opportunities to generate more funding for the program.

As we prepare to gather for our 24th Annual National Convention, we pause to reflect on all of our accomplishments during the Year June 2017 - May 2018. What we were able to accomplish would not have been possible without the support and participation of alumni, former students, family, friends and supporters. At our annual convention, we take time honor those who have made outstanding contributions to St. Teresa's Convent (STC), St. Patrick's High School (SPHS) or Santis Friskies Alumni Association. We also honor members who provide charitable service towards to upliftment of the lives of the children of Liberia.
